Configure BoxTrapper
To adjust the settings, do the following:
- Click Configure Settings.
- In the Email addresses for this account box, list the addresses that forward mail to this account, separated by commas.
- Type your name into the Your Name box.
- In the The number of days that you wish to keep logs and messages in the queue. box, set how many days logs and queued messages are retained.
- Set the threshold in the Minimum SpamAssassin Spam Score required to bypass BoxTrapper box.
Note:A message whose spam score falls below the Minimum SpamAssassin Spam Score required to bypass BoxTrapper value goes straight to the recipient. A low threshold makes BoxTrapper challenge more senders; a high one lets more mail through untouched. A threshold of
5, for instance, triggers more challenges than10. The default is-2.5. Learn more in the SpamAssassin spam score section below. - Tick or untick the checkbox for automatic whitelisting. When active, BoxTrapper whitelists every address you write to.
- Tick Automatically whitelist the To and From lines from whitelisted senders (whitelist by association) to whitelist the addresses in the To and CC lines of incoming messages from whitelisted senders.
- Click Save.
SpamAssassin spam score
SpamAssassin examines each message and assigns a numeric score; the higher the score, the likelier the message is spam. Negative scores are possible too and usually indicate legitimate mail. It combines many checks, such as Bayesian filtering, blocklists, DNS (Domain Name System) lookups and online databases. The SpamAssassin documentation lists the tests. A score has no upper or lower bound.
Edit confirmation messages
BoxTrapper sends automatic replies built from these templates:
| Template | Description |
|---|---|
| verify | Sent when someone not on the whitelist or blacklist writes to you. It asks the sender to reply and prove they are a real person. |
| verifyreleased | Sent after the sender answers the verify message, either by email or by clicking the verification link. |
| returnverify | Sent when verification does not succeed. |
| blacklist | Sent when an address on the blacklist writes to you. |
Click Edit to change the verification and blacklist templates.
The templates accept these variables:
| Variable | Description |
|---|---|
%email% |
Email address of the sender. |
%fromname% |
Name of the recipient. |
%subject% |
Subject line of the sender's message. |
%acct% |
Username of the recipient. |
%msgid% |
Message ID of the sender's message. |
%headers% |
Header information of the sender's message. |
|
Wrap a block of text in this pair of tags to let senders verify themselves through a web link. |
Leave verify#%msgid% in the subject of the verify template exactly as it is. BoxTrapper needs that code to work, so do not change it.
Click Reset to Default to bring back the original templates.
Edit whitelists, blacklists, and ignore lists
Edit the lists with these steps:
- Click Edit White/Black/Ignore lists.
- Choose the list to change.
- Add the messages, subjects or email addresses you want to match.
- Click Save.
BoxTrapper lists
Each incoming message is checked against three lists:
| List Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Whitelist | Matching messages land directly in your inbox. Note:
The Ignore list wins over the Whitelist: a message from a whitelisted sender is still deleted if it contains a word from the Ignore list. |
| Ignore list | Matching messages are deleted with no notice to anyone. |
| Blacklist | Matching messages are deleted, and the sender gets a reply saying the message was blocked. |
Forward List
Click Forward List, type the addresses to add, and click Save. Whitelisted mail is then forwarded to those addresses automatically.
