Overview

Here you can have the server compress selected kinds of content automatically before it is delivered to visitors, which reduces the amount of data transferred.

Note:

This page appears in cPanel only if your system administrator has turned on the mod_deflate Apache module; the administrator must enable it.

Manage compression

To turn compression off for your site:

  1. Choose Disabled.
  2. Press Update Settings.

To compress everything your site serves:

  1. Choose Compress All Content.
  2. Press Update Settings.

To compress only certain content types:

  1. Choose the Compress the specified MIME types option.

  2. In the MIME Types box, type the types to compress, separated by spaces, such as text/html text/plain text/xml.

    Note:
    • Image formats such as .jpg and .png are already compressed, so leave them out of the list.
    • Apache will compress PHP output only if you switch on zlib.output_compression in the MultiPHP INI Editor (cPanel » Home » Software » MultiPHP INI Editor).
    • A full catalogue of types is available in Wikipedia’s list of internet media types.
  3. Press Update Settings.

Note:

The settings are written to a .htaccess file in your home directory. Your system administrator tunes them through the Apache FileMatch directive.

Additional information

The mod_deflate module performs the compression. Its manual for each Apache release is linked below, so pick the one that matches your server:

Note:

The Stats sidebar on the cPanel Home screen shows which Apache version your server runs.
